Serenity Now! ;)

I'm in a funk. And I have been for the last couple days.

Throughout the past few years, I've had the blessed opportunity to see first-hand how our thoughts create our lives. And, while I won't pretend to know all the cosmic workings of the Universe, I do know that dwelling on the negative doesn't help.

Yet we all experience negative emotion. With the contrast of life providing choice after choice after choice, it's a given that we aren't always going to feel hunky dory. That we're not always going to be positive little Pollyannas or live every day like in Zen-like bliss. And that's okay. It's only when we allow ourselves to get caught up in the contrast and wallow in the negativity that we have a problem.

Well, lately I've been wallowing. A lot.

Today, however, I had an epiphany. I'm going to give myself a break and allow it.
Not the wallowing part. (Of course I don't encourage that.) But I am going to allow myself to feel - despite what comes up.

Feel. And release.

I'm beginning to learn that it's just as important to honor negative emotions as positive ones. It's common, when we first learn that our thoughts create our lives, to suddenly condemn any feelings that aren't upbeat, joyful and, well, positive. I've done it. The minute those less than pleasant feelings of despair, fear, or uncertainty start to simmer in the pit of my stomach, my first thought is to push, push, push them back down. Slap the lid on and hold down tight. Because to let them out, to allow them to boil to the surface and take control - even if only a little while - would be tantamount to disaster.

Have you ever watched Seinfeld? Do you remember the episode where George's father would yell out, "Serenity now!" whenever he felt his own negative feelings threaten to emerge? As the show progressed, we watched as said feelings erupted into a tirade of frenzied energy - lashing out at unpredictable and completely inopportune times. Hilarious as that episode was, it did make a good point. We, as human beings, experience feelings - good and bad - and, one way or another, we have to let them out. No, maybe they won't explode on us the way they did on Mr. Costanza, but they can do something probably even worse.

They can block our joy. Stimy our expansion.

And, worse yet, they can cloud our vision. These unexpressed emotions can blind us, completely hiding solutions that we would have otherwise seen had we not been repressing forbidden, "taboo" feelings. Our emotions are feedback from our soul, our Inner Being, and when we ignore them - even if we're only ignoring the not so pleasant ones - we are, in a sense, ignoring our higher power.

I'm in a rut. I feel that all of my creativity has drained away, leaving nothing more than a hollowed out shell. I absolutely love photography - it's an art that I will always, always adore. But I'm no longer confident that it's the right path for me. Or, perhaps more accurately, I'm no longer convinced that it's the only path for me.

I think there's more. No, wait... I feel there's more.

I think I'm ready to expand again. Yes, it's a bit soon. I did, after all, just begin this photographic journey less than two years ago. But hey, quick is how I roll. And since life is meant to be lived, I think I'll go ahead and live it.

There's been a feeling brewing in the pit of my stomach for a while now, and lately it's been threatening to boil over. For the last few weeks, I've kept the lid on it. But now... Well, I think I'll stop resisting and see what happens.

I'm ready for the explosion.

Today's Funny: Laughter with a Side of Wisdom

Russell Brand... Not only does he bring laughter to Ellen, but pure wisdom. Love, love, love his philosophy on happiness.

Hmmm... I think I'll definitely have to check out his books.

Enjoy! :)

Juliana: Lifestyle Portraiture

Juliana is my favorite type of person.

She's fun. She's bubbly. She's laid back and down to earth.

And, most importantly, she loves learning.

Her current project is the guitar, which, she says, is something that she's always wanted to learn. "I figure now's as good a time as any," she informed me during our shoot, already holding it like a pro. When I asked her why she was learning to play, she just shrugged, absently plucked a few strings, and said (flashing her dazzling smile), "Just because."

Just because.

Learning is freedom. All too often, when we finish school - whether it be high school, college, or even graduate school - we sigh with relief, thinking, Whew. No more studying! No more books! And, even if we don't think it outright, what we're really generating is the message, No more learning!

It is my opinion that we should never stop learning - even if it's something as simple as how to change a tire. Learning is what keeps us fresh. It's what keeps our minds agile, open, and awake.

Learning is what keeps us alive.

Ashleen: A Senior Session

Ah, this particular session... A perfect example of fall weather in the Pacific Northwest. Sigh.

After a quick reschedule due to a rain delay, we reset Ashleen's session for the first day of October. Beautiful fall leaves, crisp autumn air, buttery yellow Indian Summer sun.... Sounds good, right? Well, October first had all of that. All of it, I tell you! And then, about a half hour before we were scheduled to meet - you guessed it - the clouds rolled in. Big time. In fact, the cloud cover grew so thick, it was practically twilight by the time we were done. (No sign of the Cullens, though. Har, har, har...)

Luckily, Ashleen can look good in any light. And she's honestly about as sweet as they come. Okay, so it might have something to do with the fact that she works in a candy store... But I doubt it. I just think she's naturally that way. She took the weather in stride and we ended up having a great time wandering through Seattle's Arboretum, getting (somewhat) lost on the trails, frolicking, and searching for the elusive Japanese Maples. (We never did find 'em.)

All in all a wonderful session. Which goes to show, it really is the subject that makes the shoot. And Ashleen... She made hers phenomenal.

Cheers, Ashleen! And best of luck throughout your senior year and beyond!

Holiday Mini-Sessions!

Along with the start of my favorite month brings the realization that the holidays are (gasp!) right around the corner. That means cozy nights in front of the fire, family fun, holiday parties, presents, cookies and fudge, halls decked out in boughs of holly, twinkling lights wrapped around trees adorned with tinsel, and a whole lot of jolliness. (Yes, jolliness.)

Oh, and it also means holiday cards.

So from now until the end of November, I'll be offering Holiday Mini-Sessions here in Bothell. Because your time is precious (and even more so during the rush of the season), these shoots will fit into your schedule perfectly. Timed at approximately twenty to thirty minutes, these sessions aim at providing you and your family with beautiful photos for your holiday cards. Whether you want everyone in the shot (up to five people), or just the kids - it's up to you! (Hey, even furry, four-legged kids are welcome!) Within a week of your shoot, you'll receive a CD with 15 images. This CD belongs to you and the images will not have my name on them. It's yours to keep, allowing you to view, share, and print the photos at your leisure.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions!

Cost: $125

Danie: Lifestyle Portraiture

Danie is.

I consider myself lucky to know Danie. She has the natural, down-to-earth ability to put anyone at ease. No matter the circumstance, she can take whatever's happening and turn it into something... Special. Whether it's chatting over hot tea at Starbucks, or shooting with a camera that's acting up more than a two-year old throwing a temper tantrum, she can bring ease and grace to any situation. Reality is of no consequence to Danie. She lives completely in the moment, blessing each and every person she comes across with a feeling of peace and - I'll say it even at the risk of sounding uber cheesy - utter tranquility.

Danie is Zen. Her outlook on life, magical. She's a beautiful soul who actually walks her talk. Spend any time with her at all and you'll feel like you just got a shot of Vega. (Wink, wink.) She is truly, truly one of the most positive, uplifting, and balanced people I know. :)

Thanks for a wonderful, wonderful morning, Danie! Looking forward to your new album!! :)

Today's Funny: Go Ahead and Laugh...

This clip (featuring Mooji) is enlightening as well as hilarious... Not only is laughter healing, but it's (obviously) extremely contagious. :)

Have you laughed today?? :)
